The Last Mile: Delivering on the Promise of Evidence-based Reading, Language, and Literacy Instruction for All Learners

Increasing interest in the science of reading, coupled with unprecedented challenges in learning and schooling, has contributed to a renewed focus on how best to address reading difficulty and disabilities in schools. The good news is that never before have we had more evidence-based resources and tools to rely upon to improve reading achievement in schools. But, getting there isn’t always as easy as it seems. Nonetheless, these challenges are not insurmountable! We can change the trajectory so that all children are on a path to reading and succeeding in school. In this session, we will discuss important considerations for educators and leaders as we all journey together to use evidence to improve reading, language, and literacy for all learners.

Nicole Patton Terry, Ph.D.

She is the founding director of two university-based research entities where researchers work collaboratively with diverse school and community stakeholders to promote student success among children and youth: The Urban Child Study Center at GSU and The Village at FCRR. Her research, innovation, and engagement activities concern young learners who are vulnerable to experiencing difficulty with language and literacy achievement in school, in particular, Black children, children growing up in poverty, and children with disabilities. Her research and scholarly activities have been supported by various organizations, including the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Institute of Education Sciences, the Spencer Foundation, and the William T.
