Florida State University’s Florida Center for Reading Research is partnering with the University of Oregon and RMC Research Corporation to launch the National Comprehensive Center to Improve Literacy for Students with Disabilities. The Center is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Offices of Elementary and Secondary Education and Special Education and Rehabilitative Services. The goal of the Center is to identify & disseminate evidence-based assessment tools, literacy instructional strategies, technologies, and professional development materials that may be used by parents, teachers, and paraprofessionals in support of students with disabilities. The Center Director is University of Oregon Associate Professor of Education Dr. Hank Fien. The Deputy Directors are FCRR Associate Director Dr. Yaacov Petscher and RMC Research Corporation Senior Research Associate Sarah Sayko. Dr. Petscher explains, “This Center will translate, centralize, and localize the immense body of research on literacy and learning disabilities from the last 30 years and disseminate high-quality research through the use of infographics, learning management systems, and other technology-based outlets that will hopefully support parents and teachers in supporting children with learning disabilities.” Dr. Fien further adds, “Through a strong partnership among researchers, practitioners, and organizations, the center will strive to improve rates of student literacy attainment and reduce levels of risk and complications associated with literacy-related disabilities and improve schools identification and effective treatment for students with dyslexia."

The Florida Center for Reading Research is a multidisciplinary research center at Florida State University that explores all aspects of reading research — basic research into literacy-related skills for typically developing readers and those who struggle, studies of effective prevention and intervention, and psychometric work on formative assessment.
