Modules 1 and 2 of the Florida Reading Endorsement Competencies 1 & 2 course provide the opportunity for knowledge building and application of individual indicators throughout the course. A culminating project will provide evidence that teachers are able to apply the knowledge and skills they developed in this course in their classrooms. Below is a description of the project.
Teachers will develop and deliver a series of at least five lessons that meet the overall criteria below. Each lesson does not have to incorporate all aspects of reading; however, all components of reading should be addressed in the lesson series. The lesson series should include:
- Lessons based on appropriate grade level standards
- Lessons that incorporate evidence-based instructional practices and activities that promote comprehension, oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary
- Whole-group and small-group lessons
- Differentiated instruction based on data
- Assessments that will inform future instruction
Lessons may include activities and evidence-based practices such as:
- Whole- and small-group discussions designed to enhance oral language
- Read-alouds which focus on comprehension and vocabulary
- Phonological awareness activities such as playing with syllables in spoken words
- Explicit phonics and spelling instruction
- Activities designed to enhance fluency such as repeated readings or partner reading
- Explicit vocabulary instruction and instruction in morphology as well as activities designed to provide repeated exposure to vocabulary words
- Formative assessments such as strategic questioning, asking students to summarize, exit tickets, or classroom polls
In addition, teachers will:
- Share a 10–15 minute presentation of their series of lessons to their colleagues at the final session of the course
- Submit their series of lessons to their facilitator
- Complete and submit Reflection Sheet 8.1 that captures their reflections regarding lesson development and delivery
