Can the student identify the sequence of events in text?	Help Me Decide Have the student: (a) list or number events of a story in sequential order
Can the student compare and contrast topics, characters, settings, and problems in one text?	Help Me Decide Have the student: (a) describe similarities and differences between topics in two texts that have been read and discussed in class, and (b) describe similarities and differences between characters in two texts that have been read and discussed in class, and (c) describe similarities and differences between settings in two texts that have been read and discussed in class, and (d) describe similarities and differences between problems in two texts that have been read and discussed in class
Can the student identify cause-and-effect relationships in text?	Help Me Decide Have the student: (a) identify an event in a text and tell why it happened
Can the student identify and discuss author’s purpose?	Help Me Decide Have the student: (a) state the author’s purpose (e.g., entertain, explain, inform, persuade), and (b) use features from the text to discuss the author’s purpose
Does the student self-monitor and use comprehension strategies (e.g., reread portions of text and ask clarifying questions) when the meaning of the text is unclear?	Help Me Decide Have the student: (a) read text at his/her instructional level You will: (b) look for the student to reread portions of a text and ask clarifying questions when the meaning is unclear
Does the student use the elements of text structure to retell and summarize text?	Help Me Decide Have the student: (a) summarize and retell a selection using different elements of text structure (e.g., comparison/contrast, cause/effect, sequence, problem/solution, and point of view)
