Does the student know all letter names?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) state the letter name represented by the individual letter,
and
(b) identify the letter associated with the letter name
Does the student know all letter sounds?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) say the sound (phoneme) represented by the individual letter,
and
(b) identify the letter associated with its sound (phoneme)
Can the student decode and write words with two or three phonemes?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) read words with two and three known letter sounds,
and
(b) write dictated words with two and three known letter sounds
Can the student decode and write words that have blends at the beginning or end of the word?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) read words with blends at the beginning of the word; read words with blends at the end of the word,
and
(b) write dictated words with blends at the beginning of the word; write dictated words with blends at the end of the word
Can the student decode and write words that have the “silent e”?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) read words with the “silent e”,
and
(b) write dictated words with the "silent e"
Can the student decode and write words with more than one syllable?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) read words with more than one syllable,
and
(b) write dictated words with more than one syllable
Can the student decode unfamiliar words in connected text?
Help Me Decide
Have the student:
(a) read decodable texts containing words with previously taught sounds
