Third Grade Group 2

Group 2 consists of five students. At mid-year, their ORF scores indicate they are not reading at grade level; however, they are reading more fluently than the students in group 1. In the sample reading block schedule, this group is scheduled for small group instruction twenty minutes a day. Since these students are significantly below grade level in the development of their oral reading fluency (ORF) at mid-year, they should also receive additional instruction outside the reading block. There are many skills that are critical to reading fluently at the third grade level.

Using classroom observations and additional assessment data may indicate the skills in need of immediate intensive instruction. It is likely that the students are in need of phonics instruction in reading words with blends, digraphs, r-controlled vowels, syllables, and other spelling patterns. While focusing on developing phonics skills, continue building the student’s knowledge of vocabulary and comprehension.
