Third Grade Group 1

Group 1 is your smallest and most intensive instructional group. In the sample reading block schedule, this group is scheduled for small group instruction everyday for at least twenty-five to thirty minutes. Since these students are significantly below grade level in the development of their oral reading fluency (ORF) at mid-year, they should also receive additional instruction outside the reading block. These students are most likely also behind in vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Using classroom observations and additional assessment data may indicate the skills in need of immediate intensive instruction. You should further investigate if their lack of fluency is the result of below grade level skills in phonics. Instruction should focus on building fluency through helping students become proficient in the alphabetic principle and advanced phonics, while integrating activities that help students learn word meanings. In order to plan your instruction for these students, you need to know more about their individual needs. You can get this information as you answer the highlighted guiding questions below.
