Elements of Effective Instruction

High quality reading instruction incorporates the five components of reading delivered through a coherent instructional design.

The following graphic depicts the elements of effective instruction. This instruction requires the teacher to determine the skills to be taught based on student data. Throughout the process of teacher instruction and student practice, student progress is monitored. Assessments and observations are used to determine if the student has achieved mastery of the skill. If mastery is achieved, the student is provided with enrichment activities to increase fluency and application of the skill. If mastery is not achieved, targeted instruction is provided to facilitate mastery of the particular skill(s). When a teacher provides effective instruction that meets the needs of individual students, the likelihood of reading at grade level is increased.
