A Florida State University Center

Effectiveness of Intervention

Effectiveness of Intervention (EI)
This index shows the percentage of students who begin the year at some level of risk for reading difficulties (reading below grade level) but progress to a lower level of risk or to grade level at the mid-year or end of year assessment (e.g. they move from “Intensive” to “Strategic” or ”Initial,” or from “Strategic” to “Initial”). The Effectiveness of Interventions index, and the two sub-indices below, indicate the effectiveness of the intervention programs and their implementation to accelerate the development of students who are behind grade level in reading skills.

Effectiveness of Interventions for Intensive Students (EI-I):
This index shows the percentage of students who move from the “Intensive” risk level to the “Strategic” risk level or to “Initial” level.

Effectiveness of Interventions for Strategic Students (EI-S):
This index shows the percentage of students who move from the “Strategic” risk level to the “Initial” level.

To calculate the three EI Indices, you will need the following information and supplies:
  • Recommended Instructional Level for each of your students for the beginning of the year and either the mid-year or end of the year (If you are using the Progress Monitoring and Reporting Network (PMRN), you will find this information on the Class Recommended Level of Instruction Report. This information can be cut and pasted from the PMRN into a spreadsheet or typed into a spreadsheet).
  • Color code the Recommended Instructional Levels

    • Initial = Green
    • Strategic = Yellow
    • Intensive = Red

  • A calculator to calculate the percentages (optional)
